What do you hope readers take away from No Place Like Here<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If they haven\u2019t been in a situation like Ashlyn\u2019s, I hope readers will find empathy.\u00a0 I want them to be able to see that the person someone presents on the outside may be very different from the one they are on the inside.\u00a0 And if they have felt like Ashlyn, I sincerely hope they\u2019ll feel powerful.\u00a0 If one reader reads this book and feels inspired to speak up for themselves, even once, I\u2019ve done my job.<\/p>\n

How are you reflected in No Place Like Here<\/em> (or, how much of you is reflected in the book)?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think Ashlyn\u2019s introversion comes a little from me.\u00a0 I\u2019m totally content spending an afternoon reading a good book, like she does.\u00a0 Also, she and I are both quote collectors!\u00a0I\u2019ve kept a quote journal since I was fourteen.\u00a0 It\u2019s hilarious to look back at what I found striking back then versus now.\u00a0 And, word seems to have gotten around that the very embarrassing zipline scene happened to me in real life, which is <\/em>true, and also hilarious.<\/p>\n

What is the biggest lesson you\u2019ve learned while being a writer?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s actually the same thing Ashlyn learns\u2014stand up for yourself.\u00a0 Do what feels right for you and write fearlessly.\u00a0 And with that, stand up for others.\u00a0 We writers have a platform and we need to use it for good.\u00a0 Spend time listening and observing and when you can, lift up the voices of those who need it.<\/p>\n
